Basic Shapes

Shapes are everywhere! Let's learn about circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles. Look around - can you spot any shapes right now?

Meet the Shapes!

Today we'll learn about four important shapes. Each shape has its own special features!

Circle

Round and round!
No corners
No straight sides
Perfectly round

Square

All sides the same!
4 corners
4 sides
All sides equal

Triangle

Three of everything!
3 corners
3 sides
Like a mountain

Rectangle

Long and tall!
4 corners
4 sides
Like a door

Shape Secret: Count the corners (points) and sides (lines) to tell shapes apart!

Counting Sides and Corners

Let's count the sides and corners of each shape!

🔵

Circle

0 sides, 0 corners
🔺

Triangle

3 sides, 3 corners
🟥

Square

4 sides, 4 corners
🟧

Rectangle

4 sides, 4 corners
Square vs Rectangle: A square has 4 equal sides (all the same length). A rectangle has 2 long sides and 2 short sides!

Shape Song

The Shape Song

A circle is round, it goes round and round,
No corners or sides can be found!

A triangle has three sides you see,
Count them with me: one, two, three!

A square has four sides, all the same,
Four equal sides is its claim to fame!

A rectangle's long, a rectangle's tall,
Two short, two long - that is all!

Practice: Name That Shape!

Fun Activities!

Activity 1: Shape Hunt

Go on a shape hunt around your room or house!

  • Find 3 circles
  • Find 3 squares
  • Find 3 triangles
  • Find 3 rectangles

Draw what you found!

Activity 2: Shape Art

Create a picture using only shapes!

  • Draw a house using a square and triangle
  • Draw a sun using a circle
  • Draw windows using rectangles
  • What else can you make?

Activity 3: Shape Sorting

Find objects around your house and sort them by shape:

  1. Make a "circles" pile (coins, buttons, lids)
  2. Make a "squares" pile (blocks, crackers, sticky notes)
  3. Make a "rectangles" pile (books, phones, cards)

What Did We Learn?

Great job learning about shapes! Remember:

  • Circle - Round, no corners, no sides
  • Triangle - 3 sides, 3 corners
  • Square - 4 equal sides, 4 corners
  • Rectangle - 4 sides (2 long, 2 short), 4 corners
Keep looking! Now that you know shapes, you'll see them everywhere you go!

What's Next?

  • Practice finding shapes everywhere you go
  • Draw pictures using different shapes
  • Next, we'll learn about patterns!
