How to Count Objects
Follow these steps:
- Point to each object one at a time
- Say the number as you point
- The last number you say is how many there are!
Guided Practice Problems
Problem 1
Count the apples. Point to each one!
Steps:
Point and say: "1" (first apple), "2" (second apple), "3" (third apple)
The last number is 3!
How many apples are there?
Problem 2
Count the butterflies!
Steps:
Point and count: "1, 2, 3, 4, 5"
You can use one hand to show 5!

Count the fish!
Steps:
This is more than 5! Use both hands.
Count: "1, 2, 3, 4, 5" (one hand full!) "6, 7" (two more!)
