Writing Application: Expression of Ideas
Learn
The Expression of Ideas domain tests your ability to improve the development, organization, and language use in passages. Unlike grammar questions, these focus on what to say and how to say it effectively.
Three Core Areas
1. Development
Development questions ask you to strengthen arguments and improve clarity:
- Adding relevant support: Which evidence best supports the claim?
- Sharpening focus: Which sentence should be deleted as off-topic?
- Elaboration: Which detail would most effectively develop this point?
- Precision: Which word most accurately conveys the intended meaning?
2. Organization
Organization questions test logical structure and flow:
- Logical sequence: Where should this sentence be placed?
- Transitions: Which word or phrase provides the best connection?
- Introductions and conclusions: Which opening/closing is most effective?
- Paragraph coherence: How should sentences be reordered?
3. Effective Language Use
These questions focus on style and rhetorical effectiveness:
- Concision: How can wordiness be eliminated?
- Style and tone: Which choice maintains the passage's voice?
- Syntax: Which sentence structure is most effective?
- Word choice: Which word is most precise or appropriate?
The PURPOSE-CONTEXT-EFFECT Framework
For every Expression of Ideas question, ask:
- PURPOSE: What is this sentence/paragraph trying to accomplish?
- CONTEXT: What comes before and after? What does the passage overall discuss?
- EFFECT: How does each answer choice change the meaning, tone, or flow?
Examples
Example 1: Development Question
Passage excerpt: "The company's new sustainability initiative has garnered significant attention. [BLANK] As a result, investor confidence has grown substantially."
Question: Which choice most effectively supports the claim about the initiative's impact?
- The CEO announced the program at a press conference last month.
- Within six months, carbon emissions dropped by 23% while profits increased by 8%.
- Many employees expressed enthusiasm about the new direction.
- Sustainability has become a major topic in business circles.
Analysis: B is correct. The sentence needs to connect "garnered attention" to "investor confidence." Only B provides concrete results (emissions down, profits up) that would logically increase investor confidence. The other options don't establish this cause-effect relationship.
Example 2: Transition Question
Passage: "Traditional libraries served as quiet repositories of physical books. [TRANSITION], modern libraries have transformed into dynamic community spaces offering digital resources, maker spaces, and social services."
Question: Which transition most effectively connects these sentences?
- Similarly
- In contrast
- Therefore
- For example
Analysis: B is correct. The sentences present a contrast between traditional ("quiet repositories") and modern ("dynamic community spaces") libraries. "In contrast" signals this shift. "Similarly" would suggest they're alike; "Therefore" implies causation; "For example" would introduce an illustration.
Example 3: Concision Question
Original: "The archaeologists made the discovery of ancient artifacts that dated back to a period of time that was approximately 3,000 years ago in the past."
Question: Which revision eliminates redundancy while preserving meaning?
- The archaeologists discovered ancient artifacts dating back approximately 3,000 years.
- The archaeologists made the discovery of ancient artifacts from 3,000 years ago.
- Ancient artifacts were discovered by the archaeologists from a period approximately 3,000 years in the past.
- The discovery of ancient artifacts was made, dating back to approximately 3,000 years ago in the past.
Analysis: A is correct. It eliminates redundancies: "made the discovery of" becomes "discovered"; "a period of time that was approximately" becomes "approximately"; "years ago in the past" becomes just "years" (since "ago" already implies the past).
