Force Pictures

Scientists draw pictures to show what they learn. Let's draw what pushes and pulls do!

📖 Learn

When scientists do experiments, they record what happens. That means they write it down or draw pictures!

How Scientists Record

  • 📝 Draw a picture of what you saw
  • ➡️ Use arrows to show which way things moved
  • ⬅️ Big arrows = moved a lot
  • Small arrows = moved a little

Arrows Show Movement

We use arrows to show which way something moves:

  • ➡️ Arrow pointing right = moved right (push away)
  • ⬅️ Arrow pointing left = moved left (pull toward)
  • ⬆️ Arrow pointing up = moved up
  • ⬇️ Arrow pointing down = moved down

💡 Examples

Example 1: Ball Push ⚽

What happened: I pushed the ball. It rolled across the room.

My picture:

🖐️ ⚽ ➡️➡️➡️

What it shows: Hand pushed ball. Ball moved far to the right!

Example 2: Wagon Pull 🛷

What happened: I pulled the wagon. It came a little bit closer.

My picture:

⬅️ 🛷 🖐️

What it shows: Wagon moved a little to the left toward me.

Example 3: Car Race 🚗

What happened: I pushed the car hard. It went very far!

My picture:

🖐️ 🚗 ➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️

What it shows: Big push = many arrows = went far!

✏️ Practice

Look at each picture and answer the question:

1. 🖐️ ⚽ ➡️ What happened to the ball?

2. ⬅️⬅️⬅️ 🚗 🖐️ Did the car move a lot or a little? How do you know?

3. 🖐️ 📦 ➡️➡️➡️➡️ Was this a big push or a small push?

4. Draw a picture of pushing a toy car that goes far. Use arrows!

5. Draw a picture of pulling a book toward you. Use arrows!

6. ⚽ ⬇️ What direction did the ball go?

7. 🏃 ➡️ ⚽ ➡️➡️➡️ Who pushed the ball? Which way did it go?

8. How many arrows would you use to show a very tiny push? (1, 2, or 5)

9. How many arrows would you use to show a very big push? (1, 2, or 5)

10. Draw your own force picture! Show something being pushed or pulled.

11. 🛷 ⬆️ What happened to the sled?

12. Look at your force picture from #10. Tell a friend what happened in your picture.

✅ Check Your Understanding

Think about what you learned:

Can you draw arrows to show which way something moved? ➡️ ⬅️

Can you use more arrows to show something moved far?

Can you look at a force picture and tell what happened?

🚀 Next Steps

  • Practice drawing force pictures at home
  • Show your pictures to a grown-up and explain what happened
  • Next, we will learn to explain WHY things move!
