Putting Together (Addition)
When we put things together, we get MORE! This is called addition. Let's learn how to add!
What is Addition?
Addition means putting things together to find out how many there are in all.
Example: Adding Apples
2 + 1 = 3
Two apples plus one apple equals three apples!
Adding with Fingers
Your fingers are great for adding! Let's try:
1 + 2 = ?
Hold up 1 finger. Now hold up 2 more. Count them all: 1, 2, 3!
2 + 2 = ?
Hold up 2 fingers on one hand. Hold up 2 on the other. Count: 1, 2, 3, 4!
3 + 2 = ?
3 fingers plus 2 fingers equals 5 fingers - a whole hand!
Addition Stories
Addition happens in stories too! Read each story and find the answer.
Story 1: The Ducks
There are 2 ducks swimming in the pond. Then 3 more ducks join them. How many ducks are there now?
Answer: 2 + 3 = 5 ducks!
Story 2: The Cookies
You have 3 cookies. Your friend gives you 1 more cookie. How many cookies do you have now?
Answer: 3 + 1 = 4 cookies!
Story 3: The Balloons
You have 2 red balloons. You get 2 blue balloons. How many balloons do you have altogether?
Answer: 2 + 2 = 4 balloons!
Addition Song
The Adding Song
When we add, we put together,
Counting up is so much fun!
One plus one is always two,
Two plus one, and now we're done - it's three!
Plus means add, it's time to grow,
Put the groups together, go!
Count them all from left to right,
Adding numbers feels just right!
Two plus two is always four,
Three plus two gives us one more - it's five!
Adding up is what we do,
Now you can add numbers too!

Fun Activities!
Activity 1: Finger Adding
Practice these with your fingers:
- 1 + 1 = ? (hold up 1 finger, then 1 more)
- 2 + 1 = ?
- 2 + 3 = ?
- 4 + 1 = ?
- 3 + 2 = ?
Activity 2: Snack Math
At snack time, practice adding!
- Put 2 crackers on one side of your plate
- Put 3 crackers on the other side
- Push them together - how many altogether?
- Try with different amounts!
Activity 3: Toy Adding
Use your toys to practice:
- Put 2 toys in one group
- Put 2 toys in another group
- Push them together
- Count all the toys: 2 + 2 = 4!
