Guided Practice: Addition & Subtraction
Let's practice adding and taking away step by step! Follow along and try each problem.
How This Works
We'll walk through problems together. First, watch how to solve it. Then, try one on your own!
Remember: Adding (+) means putting together. Subtracting (-) means taking away.
Part 1: Addition Practice
Example: Let's Add 3 + 2
Start with the first group.
We have 3 apples:
Look at the second group.
We're adding 2 more apples:
Put them together and count all!
Count: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5! We have 5 apples!
Now You Try!
Problem 1: Add the stars
2 + 3 = ?
Problem 2: Add the cookies
4 + 1 = ?
Problem 3: Add the hearts
1 + 4 = ?
Problem 4: Add the balloons
3 + 3 = ?
Part 2: Subtraction Practice
Example: Let's Subtract 5 - 2
Start with all the objects.
We have 5 bananas:
Take away the amount shown.
We're taking away 2 bananas (cross them out!):
Count what's left!
Count: 1, 2, 3! We have 3 bananas left!
Now You Try!
Problem 5: Subtract the fish
4 - 1 = ?
Problem 6: Subtract the flowers
6 - 2 = ?
Problem 7: Subtract the cars
5 - 3 = ?
Problem 8: Subtract the butterflies
7 - 4 = ?
Part 3: Mixed Practice
Now let's mix it up! Look carefully - is it addition (+) or subtraction (-)?
Problem 9: Look at the sign!
3 + 2 = ?
Problem 10: Look at the sign!
6 - 2 = ?
Problem 11: Look at the sign!
4 + 4 = ?
Problem 12: Look at the sign!
8 - 3 = ?
Great Job!
You practiced adding and subtracting! Remember:
- Addition (+) means putting things together - you get MORE
- Subtraction (-) means taking things away - you get LESS
- You can count objects, use your fingers, or count forward/backward
- Always look at the sign to know what to do!
What's Next?
- Practice more with objects at home
- Try making up your own addition and subtraction problems
- Move on to Word Problems to see how math works in stories!
