Out of all 26 letters in the alphabet, 5 of them are extra special. They are called vowels!

Why Are Vowels Special? Every word needs at least one vowel! Try saying "cat" - can you hear the /a/ in the middle? Without vowels, we couldn't make words!

Vowels vs. Consonants

The alphabet has 26 letters. We can split them into two groups:

Go on a vowel hunt around your home!

  1. Pick a vowel (like A)
  2. Walk around and find things with that vowel sound
  3. Say the word and stretch out the vowel: "c-a-a-a-t"
  4. How many things can you find for each vowel?

Use your hand to show vowels!

  1. Hold up your hand with fingers spread
  2. Each finger is a vowel: thumb = A, pointer = E, middle = I, ring = O, pinky = U
  3. When someone says a word, hold up the finger for that vowel!
  4. Say "cat" - hold up your thumb (A)!

  1. Draw or find 5 pictures for each vowel
  2. Make 5 piles - one for A, E, I, O, and U
  3. Put each picture in the right pile based on its vowel sound
  4. Check your work by saying each word!

Play Bingo with vowels!

  1. Make a Bingo card with the 5 vowels
  2. A grown-up says words like "hat," "pet," "sit," "hot," "cup"
  3. Cover the vowel you hear in each word
  4. Yell "BINGO!" when you cover all 5 vowels!

Every word needs at least one vowel. When you see a word, look for A, E, I, O, or U - there's always at least one hiding in there!
