Weather Patterns
Weather affects our lives every day! Learn about different types of weather, the tools scientists use to measure it, and how to predict what weather might come next.
What is Weather?
Weather is What's Happening Outside Right Now!
Weather describes the conditions in the atmosphere at a specific place and time. It includes temperature, precipitation, wind, and clouds. Weather can change from hour to hour and day to day!
Types of Weather
There are many different types of weather. Let's explore the most common ones!
Sunny
Clear skies with lots of sunshine. Usually warm and dry. Great for outdoor activities!
Cloudy
Clouds cover most of the sky. Can be gray and cool. Clouds block some sunlight.
Rainy
Water falls from clouds as rain. Plants love it! Don't forget your umbrella.
Snowy
Ice crystals fall from clouds as snow. Happens when it's very cold. Great for snowball fights!
Windy
Air moves fast from one place to another. Can feel cold. Perfect for flying kites!
Stormy
Thunder, lightning, and heavy rain! Stay inside and stay safe during storms.
🌡️ Temperature Matters!
Temperature tells us how hot or cold it is outside. When it's cold (below 32°F or 0°C), precipitation falls as snow instead of rain. When it's hot, water evaporates quickly and we might get thunderstorms!
Weather Instruments
Scientists called meteorologists use special tools to measure the weather. Let's learn about them!
Thermometer
Measures: TemperatureA thermometer tells us how hot or cold the air is. The liquid inside rises when it's hot and falls when it's cold. Temperature is measured in degrees Fahrenheit (°F) or Celsius (°C).
Rain Gauge
Measures: PrecipitationA rain gauge is a container that collects rain. The markings on the side tell us how many inches or centimeters of rain have fallen. You can make one at home with a clear container!
Wind Vane (Weather Vane)
Measures: Wind DirectionA wind vane points in the direction the wind is coming FROM. If it points north, the wind is blowing from the north to the south. Many have a rooster shape on top!
Anemometer
Measures: Wind SpeedAn anemometer has cups that spin when the wind blows. The faster the cups spin, the stronger the wind! Wind speed is measured in miles per hour (mph).
Barometer
Measures: Air PressureA barometer measures how hard the air is pressing down on us. High pressure usually means sunny weather. Low pressure often brings clouds and rain!

Weather Patterns & Prediction
Weather follows patterns! By observing these patterns, we can predict what weather might come next.
📊 Observing Patterns
Scientists collect weather data every day. By looking at patterns over time, they can make predictions. For example:
- If dark clouds form and the air feels humid, rain is likely coming
- If the barometer shows falling pressure, stormy weather may be on its way
- If winds shift direction, the weather is probably changing
The clouds are getting dark and thick. The wind is picking up. Birds are flying low.
Prediction: A storm is probably coming! ⛈️
🔄 The Water Cycle and Weather
Weather patterns are connected to the water cycle:
- Evaporation: The sun heats water, turning it into vapor that rises into the air
- Condensation: Water vapor cools and forms clouds
- Precipitation: Water falls as rain, snow, sleet, or hail
- Collection: Water collects in oceans, lakes, and rivers, and the cycle starts again!
Sample Weekly Weather Log
| Day | Temperature | Conditions | Wind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | 72°F | ☀️ Sunny | Light |
| Tuesday | 68°F | ⛅ Partly Cloudy | Moderate |
| Wednesday | 65°F | ☁️ Cloudy | Strong |
| Thursday | 58°F | 🌧️ Rainy | Strong |
| Friday | 62°F | ⛅ Partly Cloudy | Light |
Seasons and Weather
Earth's tilt causes seasons. Each season has its own typical weather patterns!
Spring
- Temperature warms up
- Lots of rain showers
- Flowers bloom
- Days get longer
Summer
- Hottest temperatures
- Afternoon thunderstorms
- Longest days
- Great for swimming!
Fall (Autumn)
- Temperature cools down
- Less rain than spring
- Leaves change colors
- Days get shorter
Winter
- Coldest temperatures
- Snow in cold areas
- Shortest days
- Time for warm clothes!
