Timed Math

Learn to solve math problems quickly and accurately! On big tests like the SAT and ACT, you need to work fast AND get the right answers. Let's practice being a speedy math star!

Why Timed Math Matters

Speed + Accuracy = Test Success!

Big tests give you a certain amount of time to answer many questions. The better you are at working quickly without making mistakes, the higher your score will be!

🎯 What Makes a Timed Test Different?

On a timed test, you cannot spend forever on one problem. You need to:

  • Read each problem carefully but quickly
  • Know your math facts by heart
  • Use smart strategies to solve problems faster
  • Check your work before moving on
  • Skip hard problems and come back to them
Did you know? The SAT gives you about 1-2 minutes per math problem, and the ACT gives you about 1 minute per problem. That sounds short, but with practice, you can do it!

Timed Math Strategies

Use these smart strategies to work faster and get more answers right!

1
Read First

Read the whole problem before solving. What are they asking for?

2
Look for Clues

Key words like "total," "each," and "remaining" tell you what to do.

3
Estimate First

Round numbers to guess the answer. This helps you avoid silly mistakes!

4
Check Your Work

Take 5 seconds to double-check. Does your answer make sense?

⏱️ The Skip and Return Strategy

If a problem seems too hard, do not waste time! Skip it and come back later. Here is how:

  1. Try the problem for about 30 seconds
  2. If you are stuck, mark it and move on
  3. Answer all the easier problems first
  4. Go back to hard problems with remaining time

Quick Check Method

After solving, quickly check your answer:

Problem: 7 x 8 = ?

Your answer: 56

Quick check: 7 x 8 is close to 7 x 10 = 70, and 56 is less than 70. Makes sense!

Example: Working Quickly

Watch how we solve this problem step by step, quickly but carefully:

Sample Problem

A garden has 4 rows of flowers. Each row has 6 flowers. How many flowers are in the garden?

Step 1: Read and understand (5 seconds)

4 rows, 6 flowers each, find total

Step 2: Choose operation (2 seconds)

"Each row has" means equal groups = multiplication!

Step 3: Solve (3 seconds)

4 x 6 = 24

Step 4: Check (3 seconds)

Does 24 flowers make sense for 4 rows of 6? Yes! 6+6+6+6 = 24

Answer: 24 flowers (Total time: about 15 seconds!)
