Times Tables Mastery

Multiplication is one of the most important math skills you'll ever learn. Knowing your times tables by heart will help you solve problems faster and prepare you for more advanced math!

What is Multiplication?

Multiplication is Repeated Addition!

When we multiply, we're adding the same number over and over again. Instead of writing 3 + 3 + 3 + 3, we can write 4 x 3 = 12. It's a shortcut!

🔢 Understanding the Parts

Every multiplication problem has three parts:

4 x 3 = 12

4 = Factor (how many groups)

3 = Factor (how many in each group)

12 = Product (the answer)

Remember: You can multiply numbers in any order and get the same answer! This is called the Commutative Property. So 4 x 3 = 3 x 4 = 12.

Any number x 0 = 0
Zero groups = nothing!
x 1 Facts
Same
Any number x 1 = itself
One group = that number!
x 2 Facts
Double
x 2 = double the number

The 5s Trick

Multiples of 5 always end in 0 or 5!

Skip count by 5s:

5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 45 50

🖐️ The 9s Finger Trick

Hold up all 10 fingers. To find 9 x any number (1-10):

  1. Put down the finger that matches the number you're multiplying by
  2. Count fingers to the LEFT of the down finger = tens digit
  3. Count fingers to the RIGHT = ones digit

9 x 7 = ?

Put down finger #7 (from left)

6 fingers on left, 3 on right = 63

9 x 7 = 63

🧮 The 9s Pattern

Look at the 9 times table - the digits always add up to 9!

9 x 2 = 18 (1 + 8 = 9)

9 x 3 = 27 (2 + 7 = 9)

9 x 4 = 36 (3 + 6 = 9)

9 x 5 = 45 (4 + 5 = 9)

🔗 Use Facts You Know

Don't know 6 x 8? Break it into facts you DO know!

6 x 8 = ?

Think: 5 x 8 = 40 (5s are easy!)

Add one more 8: 40 + 8 = 48

6 x 8 = 48
