The picture shows us a butterfly, but the caption tells us so much more! From the caption, we learn:
- The type of butterfly (monarch)
- What plant it's on (milkweed)
- An amazing fact about migration
Pictures and diagrams help us understand what we read! Learning to read captions, labels, maps, and charts will make you a stronger reader who can find information quickly.
A caption is a sentence or two written below or next to a picture. It explains what the picture shows and gives you extra information.
The picture shows us a butterfly, but the caption tells us so much more! From the caption, we learn:
A diagram is a special kind of picture that uses labels to point out the parts of something. Diagrams help us understand how things are put together or how they work.
Look at this diagram. Notice how each label points to a different part of the plant:
Words that name the parts of a diagram. Lines connect labels to the parts they describe.
Arrows or lines point from the label to the exact part being named.
The title tells you what the whole diagram is showing.
When you read, pictures, diagrams, and captions work with the words to help you understand better. Here's how:
From the text: "A bicycle has two wheels that help it roll along the ground."
From the diagram: We can SEE where the wheels are and how the other parts connect!
The text tells us facts, and the diagram shows us how everything fits together. Together, they give us the complete picture!
Maps show places, and charts organize information. Both use labels and keys to help you understand what you're looking at.
Maps have special features that help you understand them:
Charts organize information so it's easy to compare. Look at this bar chart:
From this chart, we can quickly see that dogs are the most popular pet in the class. The taller the bar, the more students chose that pet!
Match each text feature with what it does! Click one item from each column to make a match.
Click on a word, then click on the correct blank to label the plant parts!
Test your understanding of captions, diagrams, and visual features!
