Reading Passage: "The Lost Puppy"
Chapter 1
Maya was walking home from school when she heard a tiny whimper. She looked behind a bush and found a small brown puppy shivering in the cold. The puppy had no collar and looked very hungry.
"Oh no, you poor thing!" Maya said. She gently picked up the puppy and wrapped it in her jacket. "I'll help you find your family."
Chapter 2
Maya brought the puppy home and showed her mom. Together, they made "Found Dog" posters with a photo of the puppy. They put them up around the neighborhood.
Days passed, but no one called. Maya started to hope that maybe she could keep the puppy. She named him Buddy and taught him to sit.
Chapter 3
One week later, the phone rang. A little boy named Sam was on the line. "That's my puppy Max!" he cried. "He ran away during a thunderstorm and I've been so worried!"
Maya felt sad, but she knew the right thing to do. When Sam came to pick up Max, he was so happy that he hugged Maya. "Thank you for taking care of him," he said. Sam and Maya became good friends, and Maya got to visit Max whenever she wanted.
