Guided Practice with Place Value
Learn
In this lesson, you will practice breaking down numbers into hundreds, tens, and ones with step-by-step help. This guided practice will strengthen your understanding of place value.
Remember the Place Value Chart
Every three-digit number can be broken into three parts:
| Hundreds | Tens | Ones |
|---|---|---|
| 100s | 10s | 1s |
Steps to Find Place Value
- Look at the leftmost digit - This is the hundreds place
- Look at the middle digit - This is the tens place
- Look at the rightmost digit - This is the ones place
Helpful Tip: You can use base-ten blocks to visualize numbers. A flat square = 100, a long stick = 10, and a small cube = 1.
Examples
Let's work through some examples together, step by step.
Example 1: Break down 347
Step 1: Find the hundreds digit: 3
This means 3 hundreds = 300
Step 2: Find the tens digit: 4
This means 4 tens = 40
Step 3: Find the ones digit: 7
This means 7 ones = 7
Answer: 347 = 300 + 40 + 7
Example 2: Break down 582
Step 1: Hundreds digit is 5 = 500
Step 2: Tens digit is 8 = 80
Step 3: Ones digit is 2 = 2
Answer: 582 = 500 + 80 + 2
Example 3: What number has 6 hundreds, 0 tens, and 9 ones?
Step 1: 6 hundreds = 600
Step 2: 0 tens = 0
Step 3: 9 ones = 9
Answer: 600 + 0 + 9 = 609
Practice
Now it is your turn! Work through these problems step by step.
Problem 1: Break down the number 256 into hundreds, tens, and ones.
Show Hint
Start by identifying each digit. The 2 is in the hundreds place.
Show Answer
256 = 200 + 50 + 6 (2 hundreds, 5 tens, 6 ones)
Problem 2: What is the value of the digit 7 in the number 473?
Show Hint
First, find which place the 7 is in. Is it in hundreds, tens, or ones?
Show Answer
The 7 is in the tens place, so its value is 70.
Problem 3: Write the number that has 8 hundreds, 3 tens, and 5 ones.
Show Hint
Add together: 800 + 30 + 5
Show Answer
835
Problem 4: Break down 901 into expanded form.
Show Hint
Be careful with the zero! 0 tens means the tens place contributes nothing.
Show Answer
901 = 900 + 0 + 1 (or simply 900 + 1)
Problem 5: What is the value of the digit 4 in 642?
Show Hint
The 4 is the middle digit. Which place is that?
Show Answer
The 4 is in the tens place, so its value is 40.
Problem 6: Build a number with 5 hundreds, 2 tens, and 8 ones.
Show Hint
Hundreds go first, then tens, then ones: 500 + 20 + 8
Show Answer
528
Problem 7: In the number 789, what is the value of each digit?
Show Hint
Find the value of 7, then 8, then 9 based on their positions.
Show Answer
7 = 700 (hundreds), 8 = 80 (tens), 9 = 9 (ones)
Problem 8: Break down 410 into hundreds, tens, and ones.
Show Hint
The ones digit is 0, which means there are no ones.
Show Answer
410 = 400 + 10 + 0 (4 hundreds, 1 ten, 0 ones)
Problem 9: What number has 3 hundreds, 7 tens, and 0 ones?
Show Hint
Add: 300 + 70 + 0
Show Answer
370
Problem 10: Circle which is greater: the 5 in 523 or the 5 in 359?
Show Hint
Think about what place each 5 is in. Hundreds are worth more than tens!
Show Answer
The 5 in 523 is greater (500) because it is in the hundreds place. The 5 in 359 is only worth 50 because it is in the tens place.
Check Your Understanding
Answer these questions to make sure you understand the lesson.
Question 1: Which digit tells you how many hundreds are in a number?
Show Answer
The leftmost digit (first digit) in a three-digit number tells you the hundreds.
Question 2: In the number 846, which digit has the greatest value?
Show Answer
The 8 has the greatest value because it is in the hundreds place (8 x 100 = 800).
