Text Practice

Practice identifying and using spelling patterns in sentences and short passages.

Learn

Now that you know about long vowel patterns and the silent e rule, it is time to practice finding these patterns in real sentences and stories.

Why Practice in Context?

When you read and write, you see words in sentences, not alone. Practicing spelling patterns in context helps you:

  • Recognize patterns quickly when reading
  • Remember how to spell words correctly
  • Understand how words work together

Reading for Spelling Patterns

When you read a sentence, look for words with patterns you know:

Example sentence: "The bike rode down the lake trail."

Patterns found:

  • bike - silent e makes the i say its name
  • rode - silent e makes the o say its name
  • lake - silent e makes the a say its name
  • trail - ai vowel team makes the long a sound

Examples

Example 1: Finding Patterns in a Passage

Read this short story:

"Kate made a kite. She used tape and a pole. The kite was blue and white. Kate went to the beach to fly it. The breeze made it soar high in the sky."

Silent e words: Kate, made, kite, tape, pole, white, breeze

Vowel team words: blue, beach, soar, sky

Example 2: Choosing the Right Spelling

Which word fits?

"I will _____ my lunch to school." (take / tak)

Answer: take - The silent e makes the a say its name.

Example 3: Completing a Sentence

Fill in the blank with a word that has a long vowel sound:
