What Is a Noun?

A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or animal.

Nouns are all around us! They name everything we can see, touch, or talk about.

Types of Nouns

  • Person: mom, teacher, doctor, friend, Mr. Smith
  • Place: school, park, home, library, Texas
  • Thing: book, chair, pencil, ball, computer
  • Animal: dog, cat, bird, fish, elephant

Common Nouns vs. Proper Nouns

  • Common nouns name general people, places, or things: dog, city, girl
  • Proper nouns name specific people, places, or things: Spot, New York, Emma

Remember: Proper nouns start with a capital letter!

Most plural nouns add -s or -es to the end!
