- Find clues in the text
- Prove your answer with exact words
- Recognize different question types
- Work quickly but carefully

How to Use This Practice Set
- Read each passage carefully
- Read the question and think about what type it is
- Find the evidence in the passage
- Write down the exact words that prove your answer
- Check: Did you answer what the question asked?
Tip: Try to finish all 12 questions. Take your time on the first few. See if you can work faster on the last few!
💡 Examples
Here is one complete example before you start.
Passage:
The turtle walked slowly across the sand. Its shell was brown and bumpy. It reached the ocean and swam away.
Question 1: What did the turtle's shell look like?
Evidence: "brown and bumpy"
Question 2: How do you know the turtle went into the water?
Evidence: "It reached the ocean and swam away."
Question 3: Was the turtle fast or slow? Prove it.
Evidence: "The turtle walked slowly" - the word "slowly" proves it was not fast.

Answer all questions below. Write the exact words from each passage as your evidence.
Passage 1:
Anna found a lost puppy in the park. It had soft white fur and big brown eyes. The puppy licked her face. Anna's mom said they could keep it!
Question A: What did the puppy look like? Find all the details.
Question B: How do you know the puppy liked Anna?
Passage 2:
The fire truck raced down the street. Its siren was loud. Red lights flashed on top. People moved their cars out of the way.
Question A: What color were the lights?
Question B: How do you know the fire truck was in a hurry? Find two pieces of evidence.
Passage 3:
Kevin did not want to go to sleep. He was not tired at all. But when his head hit the pillow, his eyes closed right away. He was asleep in one minute!
Question A: What did Kevin say about being tired?
Question B: What in the story proves Kevin WAS actually tired?
Passage 4:
The squirrel climbed up the tall oak tree. It carried a nut in its mouth. At the top, it hid the nut in a hole. Now the squirrel had food for winter.
Question A: What kind of tree was it?
Question B: Why did the squirrel hide the nut? Find the evidence.
Passage 5:
Nana made the best apple pie. The crust was golden and flaky. Sweet cinnamon smell filled the whole house. We could not wait to eat a slice!
Question A: Find the words that describe how the crust looked.
Question B: How do you know the family was excited about the pie?
Passage 6:
The playground was empty. Swings hung still. No children were playing. It started to rain, so everyone had gone home.
Question A: Which sentences show that no one was at the playground?
Question B: Why was the playground empty? Prove it with evidence.
Passage 7:
Leo built a tower with blocks. It was very tall! Then his baby sister knocked it down. Leo was upset, but he decided to build it again.
Question A: What happened to the tower?
Question B: How did Leo feel at first? AND what did he decide to do? Find evidence for both.
Passage 8:
The ladybug landed on a green leaf. It had red wings with black spots. The ladybug crawled around looking for tiny bugs to eat.
Question A: What colors was the ladybug?
Question B: What was the ladybug looking for? Write the exact words.
Passage 9:
The baby took her first steps today! She walked from the couch to Daddy. Everyone clapped and cheered. Mom took a video to remember this special day.
Question A: Where did the baby walk from and to?
Question B: How do you know this was an important moment? Find two pieces of evidence.
Passage 10:
The library was quiet. Children sat at tables reading books. A librarian helped a boy find a book about dinosaurs. Signs on the wall said "Shh!"
Question A: What kind of book did the boy want?
Question B: How do you know people needed to be quiet in the library? Find two clues.
Passage 11:
The sandwich had three layers. There was bread, then turkey, then cheese, then lettuce, then more bread. It was so big that Jake could barely fit it in his mouth!
Question A: What was in the sandwich? List all the things mentioned.
Question B: How do you know the sandwich was very big?
Passage 12:
Rosa practiced piano every day after school. Her fingers moved fast on the keys. At the concert, she played her song perfectly. Her teacher smiled and nodded proudly.
Question A: When did Rosa practice piano?
Question B: How do you know Rosa played well at the concert? Find evidence about how she played AND how her teacher reacted.
