What is Addition?
Addition means putting things together to find out how many you have in all. When we add, we use the plus sign (+) and the equals sign (=).
When we add two numbers together, we find the sum. The sum is the answer to an addition problem.
Addition Words to Know
- Plus (+) - This sign means "add" or "put together"
- Equals (=) - This sign means "the same as"
- Sum - The answer when you add numbers together
Ways to Add
There are many fun ways to add numbers!
- Count on your fingers - Hold up fingers for each number and count them all
- Use objects - Use blocks, toys, or crayons to count
- Draw pictures - Draw circles or dots to help you add
- Count on - Start with the bigger number and count up
Counting On Trick
To add 3 + 4, start with the bigger number (4) in your head. Then count on 3 more: "4... 5, 6, 7!" The answer is 7!
