Writing Application
Learn
In this lesson, you will use what you know about phonics patterns to write your own words and sentences. When you can spell words using sounds, you become a better writer!
Spelling CVC Words
To spell a CVC word, say the word slowly and listen for each sound:
- cat: /c/ - /a/ - /t/ = c-a-t
- hop: /h/ - /o/ - /p/ = h-o-p
- run: /r/ - /u/ - /n/ = r-u-n
Spelling Words with Blends
Blends have two consonant sounds together. Listen for both sounds!
- Beginning blends: bl, br, cl, cr, dr, fl, fr, gl, gr, pl, pr, sc, sk, sl, sm, sn, sp, st, sw, tr
- Ending blends: nd, nt, mp, sk, st, lp, lt
Example: To spell "stop":
- Say it slowly: /st/ - /o/ - /p/
- Write the blend: st
- Write the vowel: o
- Write the ending: p
- Result: stop
Spelling Words with Digraphs
Digraphs make one sound from two letters. Remember these common digraphs:
- sh = the /sh/ sound (ship, wish, brush)
- ch = the /ch/ sound (chip, much, lunch)
- th = the /th/ sound (this, bath, with)
- wh = the /wh/ sound (when, what, which)
- ck = the /k/ sound at the end (back, duck, sick)
Example: To spell "fish":
- Say it slowly: /f/ - /i/ - /sh/
- Write: f-i-sh
- Result: fish
Writing Sentences
When you write a sentence:
- Start with a capital letter
- Use spaces between words
- End with a period, question mark, or exclamation point
- Sound out each word using what you know about phonics
