Vowel Teams

Learn

What are Vowel Teams?

Vowel teams are two vowels that work together to make one sound. When two vowels are next to each other, they team up!

Remember the vowels: A, E, I, O, U. When two vowels are together in a word, they often make a special sound.

The Vowel Team Rule

"When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking!" This means the first vowel says its name (long sound), and the second vowel is quiet.

Common Vowel Teams

AI and AY (Long A Sound)

  • ai - usually in the middle of a word: rain, tail, mail, train
  • ay - usually at the end of a word: day, play, say, way

EA and EE (Long E Sound)

  • ea - read, eat, team, seat, bean
  • ee - see, tree, bee, feet, sleep

OA and OW (Long O Sound)

  • oa - boat, coat, soap, road, goat
  • ow - snow, grow, show, low, blow

OO (Two Sounds!)

  • oo (long sound) - moon, zoo, food, cool, school
