What is the Main Idea?
The main idea is what a story or paragraph is mostly about. It is the big, important message that the author wants you to know.
Think of the main idea like the title of a movie - it tells you what the whole thing is about in just a few words!
How to Find the Main Idea
- Read the whole thing first - Do not stop in the middle!
- Ask yourself - "What is this mostly about?"
- Look for clues - The title and first sentence often give hints
- Think about the details - What do they all have in common?
Main Idea vs. Topic
The topic is the subject (like "dogs"). The main idea tells you something about the topic (like "Dogs make great pets").
Ask These Questions
- Who or what is this about? (This is the topic)
- What does the author want me to know about it? (This is the main idea)

Dogs are wonderful pets. They are loyal and loving. Dogs like to play with you. They can learn tricks. Dogs will always be your best friend.
